독서 중간중간 USC 영문학과 교수인 비엣 탄 응우엔의 YouTube 영상들을 보며 작가의 생각을 더 깊이 이해할 수 있었습니다. 특히 작년 박찬욱 감독의 영화 개봉과 관련하여 한국을 방문했을 때의 인터뷰가 인상적이었어요. 작가가 언급한 한국과 베트남 역사의 유사성, 그리고 아시아 공동의 역사에 대한 관점은 이 소설을 이해하는 데 도움이 되었습니다. 지금까지 베트남 전쟁은 주로 서양인, 특히 미국인의 관점에서 서술되어 왔지만 이제는 베트남인의 시각에서 역사를 다시 써야 한다는 부분입니다. 소설에서 주인공의 이름이 나오지 않는 부분이 인상적이고, 많은 사람들 crapulent major? 와 같이 고유명사를 쓰지 않는 서술도 의미가 있는거 같습니다. 남베트남 정보기관에서 일하면서 동시에 북베트남 스파이로 활동하는 이중 스파이라. 베트남인 어머니와 프랑스인 신부 아버지 사이에서 태어난 "bastard"라는 정체성. 미국에서 난민으로 정착하는 과정에서도 완전히 속하지 못하는 경계인의 삶을 사는 것 등등을 보며 경계인으로서의 정체성을 다시 생각하게 하는거 같아요. 소설에는 여러 인상적인 장면들이 있습니다. 초반의 사이공 탈출 장면은 베트남 전쟁의 종료와 함께 시작되는 새로운 비극. 할리우드 영화 촬영 중 사고를 당하는 장면은 서구의 오리엔탈리즘과 문화적 제국주의에 대한 비판적 인식이 드러나 있는거 같았습니다. 하지만 무엇보다 강렬했던 것은 친구 Bon과 함께 베트남 국경 지역으로 돌아가 혁명가들에게 잡혀 고문당하는 장면입니다. 특히 재교육소(reeducation camp)에서의 고문 장면들은 이해하기 어려운 철학적 사색들로 가득했어요. 후반부 고문장면을 지나가며 "Nothing"이라는 표현이 반복적으로 나옵니다. 정치위원(commissar)의 끝없는 질문에 대한 최종적 답으로 주인공이 도달하는 "아무것도 아니다"라는 깨달음. 이해가 어려워서 AI에게 물으며 읽었는데, 불교의 "공" 사상과 서구의 실존주의가 만나는 지점이며, 동시에 전체주의 체제가 개인의 정체성을 어떻게 해체시키는지를 보여주는 과정?? 이라고 해석하더군요. Namely this: while nothing is more precious than independence and freedom, nothing is also more precious than independence and freedom! 독립과 자유보다 소중한 것은 없다 Nothing이 독립과 자유보다 소중하다... 결국 독립과 자유도 의미없다.... 자유를 위해 싸웠는데, 결국 자유를 빼앗는 쪽이 되어버린 혁명가들에 대한 비판 주인공과 정치위원(Man)의 관계. 소설 내내 등장하는 리세(고등학교) 시절의 추억들과 함께, 둘이 고문자와 피고문자로 마주하는 부분이 반전이더군요. 겉보기에는 대척점에 서 있는 듯하지만, 실제로는 서로를 가장 깊이 이해하는 관계.... 이 책을 읽는 내내 베트남과 관련된 여러 개인적 기억들이 떠올랐어요. 첫째, 친정아버지의 베트남 참전 지금은 돌아가신 아버지는 대학 재학 중 입대하여 베트남에 파병되셨고, 베트남에 가게 된 진짜 스토리를 딱 한번 들었고 (제가 소설가라면 아버지의 이야기를 쓰고 싶을 정도입니다) 아버지가 모시던 대령과의 관계, 그리고 그곳에서의 경험담들을 어렴풋이 들었던 기억이 소설을 읽으며 떠올랐어요. 둘째, 호치민 여행 시 VC(베트콩) 게릴라 지역을 방문했던 기억입니다. 베트남인들이 자신들을 전쟁의 승리자로 자랑스럽게 생각하는 모습을 보며 느꼈던 복잡한 감정들이 떠올랐어요. 소설에서 그려지는 혁명 후 베트남 사회의 모습과 현실의 베트남이 어떻게 다른지, 또 어떻게 연결되는지를 생각해볼 수 있었어요. 셋째, 업무상 베트남 공공기관과 협력하며 경험했던 일들. 현대 베트남의 관료제와 사회 시스템을 직접 경험하면서 느꼈던 것들이 소설 속 권력 구조와 부패 시스템에 대한 부분과 연결지어 떠올랐어요. 넷째, 맛있는 쌀국수 개인적으로 어려운 표현과 문장에 은유적이고 함축적인 표현이 많아서 영어로 온전히 이해하기 어려웠습니다. 유튜브 책 리뷰에서 한글 번역이 아주 재미있게 잘 되었다고 한 것을 보았어요. 영어가 아니라 한글책을 봤어도 좋았겠다는 생각을 했습니다. 마지막으로 오더블로 들으며 읽었는데 나레이션한 사람이 Francois Chau 이라고 해서 찾아보았어요 Cambodian-American actor 이더군요. 나이가 65세? 책에서 주인공은 젊은 사람인데 목소리가 낮은 허스키에 노인의 목소리라서 별로더라구요 ㅎㅎ
